*Position Overview*
The Female Lawyers Association–Gambia (FLAG) invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Legal Intern. This internship provides a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in strategic litigation, human rights advocacy, and community-based legal service delivery.
The successful candidate will support the Legal Aid Clinic Team in case management, legal research, drafting, and outreach initiatives, including Mobile Legal Aid Clinics and community sensitisation programmes. The role is well-suited to a proactive individual with a demonstrated commitment to advancing access to justice, particularly for women, children, and marginalised populations.
*Key Responsibilities and Duties*
1. Legal Research and Drafting
Conduct legal research on domestic and international legal frameworks, including human rights law, family law, property rights, and gender justice. Assist in the preparation of legal opinions, pleadings, briefs, and advocacy materials.
2. Case Management Support
Assist in client intake processes, including interviews and documentation of statements. Maintain accurate and organised case files and support the tracking and monitoring of litigation and alternative dispute resolution processes.
3. Community Engagement and Outreach
Support the planning and implementation of community-based initiatives, including Mobile Legal Aid Clinics (MLACs), community dialogues, and mediation sessions, aimed at promoting legal awareness and access to justice.
*Qualifications and Key Requirements*
Education
• Currently enrolled in the second year of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme from a recognised institution.
Research and Analytical Skills
• Strong legal research, analytical, and drafting skills, with the ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, structured outputs.
Communication Skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to engage effectively in both formal and community settings.
Commitment to Human Rights
• A clear and demonstrable interest in human rights, gender equality, and social justice.

Language Proficiency
• Proficiency in local languages, particularly Wolof and Mandinka, will be considered a strong asset in light of FLAG’s community engagement mandate.
Interpersonal and Client Engagement Skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, professionalism, and the ability to engage sensitively with vulnerable clients and community stakeholders.
Adaptability and Teamwork
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, with a willingness to undertake fieldwork, including travel to regional communities where required.

FLAG is an award- winning women -led organisation that is non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-governmental, and non-profit composed of female members of the Gambian legal committed to advancing access to justice, promoting and protecting the rights of women and children in the Gambia, through legislative reforms, public education and advocacy and providing legal aid services.
Position Summary
The Legal Counsel leads the delivery of FLAG’s legal aid services and the day-to-day management of FLAG’s Legal Aid Clinic. The role combines frontline legal practice, advising and representing clients, drafting, and litigation support, with operational oversight of the Clinic, including supervision of clinic staff, interns and volunteers, and quality control of service delivery. The Legal Counsel also contributes to FLAG’s legal research, advocacy and strategic litigation work, and undertakes other legal-related assignments within the Association as required.
Key Responsibilities
The Legal Counsel shall:
- Provide legal advice and assistance to clients accessing FLAG's Legal Aid Services;
- Represent clients in civil, family, children’s, gender-based violence, inheritance, maintenance, custody, and other matters within FLAG's mandate;
- Conduct client intake interviews and case assessments;
- Draft pleadings, legal opinions, affidavits, briefs, contracts, correspondence, and other legal documents;
- Conduct legal research and prepare case strategies;
- Represent the Organisation and its clients in court and ADR proceedings, including holding watching briefs in criminal matters
- Maintain accurate client files, case records, and related documentation and case management.;
- Participate in community outreach programmes, capacity building, and public education initiatives;
- Support policy advocacy, law reform, and strategic litigation initiatives undertaken by FLAG;
- Manage the day-to-day operations of FLAG’s Legal Aid Clinic, including supervision of clinic staff, interns and volunteers, case allocation, and quality control of legal aid service delivery;
- Prepare periodic reports on legal aid activities and case outcomes; and
- Undertake any other duties assigned by FLAG in furtherance of its mandate, including other legal-related work within the organisation as may be required from time to time
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must:
- Hold an LL. B degree from a recognised institution;
- Be admitted to practice as a Legal Practitioner in The Gambia;
- Have at least five (5) years' post-enrolment experience in litigation and legal practice;
- Demonstrate strong legal research, drafting, and analytical skills;
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Be able to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
- Be capable of handling sensitive client matters with professionalism, empathy, and confidentiality;
- Have a demonstrated commitment to access to justice, human rights, gender equality, and public interest work.
Other Desirable Experience
- Experience in litigation, legal aid, human rights, family law, gender justice, or policy advocacy;
- Experience working with civil society organisations, development partners, or donor-funded projects;
- Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills. Prior experience supervising staff, interns or volunteers, or managing a legal aid clinic or similar office, will be an added advantage.
Terms of Appointment
The position is full-time and based in The Gambia. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

MLAC Day 3 In Farafenni (Kunjo Village).
Day 3 of our Mobile Legal Aid Clinics brought us to Kunjo, Farafenni, a community that welcomed us with warmth and wisdom.
There, we engaged with influential women leaders whose voices shape families and entire generations.
Together, we held meaningful conversations on FLAG’s Pro Bono Legal Services, including human rights violations, inheritance rights, child custody and maintenance, marriage, and divorce.
Our resource persons brought powerful insights to the dialogue. Ms. Jabbie highlighted the laws that protect women and children, while Imam Ousman Jah reminded the community that faith upholds dignity and compassion for all.
Mr. Mass Laye revealed the medical realities of SGBV, FGM, child marriage, and teenage pregnancy, realities that threaten futures and silence dreams.
Each speaker emphasized that culture is our strength, but only when we celebrate its positive values and abandon harmful traditional practices.
Kunju reminded us that when law, faith, culture, and community unite, change is not only possible, it is inevitable.
The women boldly expressed their desire for a strong female representative to champion their rights. And as always, FLAG will continue walking alongside our communities to ensure that every woman, every girl, and every child is protected, empowered, and truly heard.
MLAC Outreach In Farafenni Market.
Following our insightful radio talk show, the FLAG team visited the bustling Farafenni Market to engage directly with women at the heart of the community. We held meaningful conversations to deepen their understanding of FLAG’s Pro Bono Legal Services designed to protect and empower those most vulnerable.
During our outreach, we explained the critical support we provide, including legal representation for survivors of Gender-Based Violence, assistance on inheritance and property rights, guidance on child custody and maintenance matters, as well as legal support on marriage, divorce, and other family-related issues.
We also distributed informative flyers and shared our contact details to ensure that every woman knows help is accessible, timely, and free. Our mission remains clear which is to bring justice closer to those who need it most and to continue standing with women and children across The Gambia.

The Female Lawyers Association–Gambia took the voices of women and children to the airwaves of Paradise FM 105.5 in Farafenni — carrying justice to the people, one community at a time.
As our Mobile Legal Aid Clinic continues its journey across The Gambia, today we paused to speak, to educate, and to stand firmly with the world in the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence. Because access to justice is not a privilege, it is a right. And every woman, every girl, every child deserves to be heard.
We were honoured to share the platform with:
Mr. Mass Laye, a dedicated midwife, who painted a vivid picture of the health consequences of SGBV, child marriage and harmful practices, reminding us that behind every statistic is a body bruised, a mind shaken, a life transformed.
Mariama Tabally, legal practitioner, who broke down the laws that protect women and children, the institutions ready to support survivors, and the critical work Female Lawyer’s Association, Social workers and the Department of Social Welfare in restoring dignity and hope.
Imam Ousman Jah, a respected religious leader, who reaffirmed the sacred rights of women and children in Islam, reminding us that faith and justice walk hand in hand.
Today’s conversation was more than a radio show.
It was a call to action.
A reminder that when law, health, community, and faith stand together, violence loses its power.
