LEGAL COUNSEL


The Female Lawyers Association of The Gambia (FLAG) invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Legal Counsel.

About FLAG

FLAG is an award- winning women -led organisation that is non-sectarian, non-partisan, non-governmental, and non-profit composed of female members of the Gambian legal committed to advancing access to justice, promoting and protecting the rights of women and children in the Gambia, through legislative reforms, public education and advocacy and providing legal aid services.

Position Summary

The Legal Counsel leads the delivery of FLAG’s legal aid services and the day-to-day management of FLAG’s Legal Aid Clinic. The role combines frontline legal practice, advising and representing clients, drafting, and litigation support, with operational oversight of the Clinic, including supervision of clinic staff, interns and volunteers, and quality control of service delivery. The Legal Counsel also contributes to FLAG’s legal research, advocacy and strategic litigation work, and undertakes other legal-related assignments within the Association as required.

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Counsel shall:

  • Provide legal advice and assistance to clients accessing FLAG’s Legal Aid Services;
  • Represent clients in civil, family, children’s, gender-based violence, inheritance, maintenance, custody, and other matters within FLAG’s mandate;
  • Conduct client intake interviews and case assessments;
  • Draft pleadings, legal opinions, affidavits, briefs, contracts, correspondence, and other legal documents;
  • Conduct legal research and prepare case strategies;
  • Represent the Organisation and its clients in court and ADR proceedings, including holding watching briefs in criminal matters
  • Maintain accurate client files, case records, and related documentation and case management.;
  • Participate in community outreach programmes, capacity building, and public education initiatives;
  • Support policy advocacy, law reform, and strategic litigation initiatives undertaken by FLAG;
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of FLAG’s Legal Aid Clinic, including supervision of clinic staff, interns and volunteers, case allocation, and quality control of legal aid service delivery;
  • Prepare periodic reports on legal aid activities and case outcomes; and
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by FLAG in furtherance of its mandate, including other legal-related work within the organisation as may be required from time to time

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must:

  • Hold an LL. B degree from a recognised institution;
  • Be admitted to practice as a Legal Practitioner in The Gambia;
  • Have at least five (5) years’ post-enrolment experience in litigation and legal practice;
  • Demonstrate strong legal research, drafting, and analytical skills;
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Be able to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
  • Be capable of handling sensitive client matters with professionalism, empathy, and confidentiality;
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to access to justice, human rights, gender equality, and public interest work.

Other Desirable Experience

  • Experience in litigation, legal aid, human rights, family law, gender justice, or policy advocacy;
  • Experience working with civil society organisations, development partners, or donor-funded projects;
  • Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills. Prior experience supervising staff, interns or volunteers, or managing a legal aid clinic or similar office, will be an added advantage.

Terms of Appointment

The position is full-time and based in The Gambia. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
