About Sohna Jaw- Coordinator

Sohna Jaw is a the Coordinator of the Female Lawyers Association – Gambia (FLAG). She is a passionate and dedicated Gambian legal practitioner driven by a strong commitment to justice, fairness, and professional excellence. With a solid academic background in both law and psychology, she brings together analytical reasoning and empathy to deliver effective legal solutions while mentoring others in the profession.

Her academic journey reflects both determination and intellectual depth. Sohna earned her Barrister at Law (BL) from The Gambia Law School in 2020, following her pursuit of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at The University of The Gambia. She began a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the International Open University, which she has since deferred to focus on her legal career.

Professionally, Sohna has built a diverse portfolio of experience within The Gambia’s legal system. She served as a Pupil Barrister and Legal Assistant at Temple Legal Practitioners from 2021 to 2023, where she supported litigation, legal drafting, research, and case management under the supervision of her Pupil Master. Her earlier experiences include internships at the Bundung Magistrates Court and Islamic Court under the Judiciary of The Gambia, as well as the Law Offices of Malick H.B. Jallow. Through these roles, she honed her skills in court procedures, legal documentation, and client engagement.

Beyond the courtroom, Sohna has demonstrated a deep commitment to civic participation and community service. She contributed to the UNICEF Project on Peacebuilding, Education, and Diversity as a Research Enumerator, collecting field data to support community conflict analysis and education. She also worked as a Polling Assistant with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), ensuring transparency and order during National Assembly and Local Government elections.

Her dedication to community empowerment extends to her volunteerism. Sohna serves as a Programme Officer and Mentor with Kids Come First Foundation, offering educational and emotional support to vulnerable children. She previously volunteered with Think Young Women between 2015 and 2017, participating in advocacy and outreach programs that champion gender equality. As a member of AIESEC (2018–2019), she engaged in leadership and youth development initiatives, and during her time at the University of The Gambia, she held the position of Auditor General for the Law Students Association, promoting accountability and transparency.

Sohna is an active member of both the Gambia Bar Association and the Female Lawyers Association – The Gambia (FLAG), where she continues to advance her professional growth and contribute to collective advocacy for women and justice.

Fluent in English and Wolof, with moderate proficiency in Mandinka and basic French, Sohna’s multilingual abilities enhance her capacity to connect with clients and communities across The Gambia.

Guided by her passion for service and justice, Sohna Jaw continues to shape her career around integrity, mentorship, and the pursuit of equitable legal outcomes.
